Week 2 Discussion Question

Miguel has a very different life from Esperanza. Their differences have changed their friendship. Miguel repeats something Esperanza once said to him "In Mexico we stand on different sides of the river." What does Miguel mean by this? What are some of their differences? Do you think they can ever be friends again, why or why not?

  1. I think that "In Mexico we stand on different sides of the river," means that even though they stand on different sides of the river they can still see each other. If they can still see each other then they are not completely different people. Some of the differences that they have are for one thing they aren’t both rich people. Miguel lives there because he just works for the family and isn’t related to Esperanza in any way at all. On the other hand Esperanza is the daughter of a rich and well respected family. Also one is strong in feeling and muscle and the other isn’t strong on either. Miguel is a strong man who is very capable of harvesting fields. He didn’t cry when papa died although he was upset. Esperanza on the other hand doesn’t work at all so she is pretty weak. When she found out her father was dead she was devastated and burst into tears quite often. I do think that they could be friends again. They have already began to bond their friendship when Esperanza ran out into the garden and they had a little chat. ‘“Anza,” he said using her childhood name. “Which rose is yours?” In recent years, his voice had turned into a deep throttle. She hadn’t realized how much she missed it. The sound brought tears to her eyes but she quickly blinked them away. She pointed at the miniature pink blooms with delicate stems that climbed up the trellises. “And where is mine?” he asked nudging her like he did when they were younger and told each other everything’

    1. Great textual evidence: ‘“Anza,” he said using her childhood name. “Which rose is yours?” In recent years, his voice had turned into a deep throttle. She hadn’t realized how much she missed it. The sound brought tears to her eyes but she quickly blinked them away. She pointed at the miniature pink blooms with delicate stems that climbed up the trellises. “And where is mine?” he asked nudging her like he did when they were younger and told each other everything’ I agree that Esperanza and Miguel could be friends again.

  2. When Miguel says “In Mexico we stand on different sides of the river. That means that Esperanza will never be the one who is his wife or something like that because Miguel is the housekeeper’s son and Esperanza is the “rich people’s” daughter. Esperanza will just never be there with Miguel on one side of the river.

Some of Miguel’s and Esperanza’s differences are that Miguel is the housekeeper’s son and Esperanza is the “rich people’s” daughter. Another difference is that Esperanza doesn't have a father, only a mother. Miguel has a father and a mother. The last difference is that Miguel has a different life being a housekeeper’s son and Esperanza has a VERY different life being the “well respected rich people’s” daughter. Those are three differences that Miguel and Esperanza have.

I think Esperanza and Miguel can be friends again because in the chapter called Las Papayas, the text said, “”Anza,” he said using her childhood name. “Which rose is yours?’ In recent years, his voice had become a deep throttle. She didn’t realise how much she missed hearing it. The sound brought tears into her eyes but she quickly blinked them away. She pointed to the miniature pink blossoms with delecit stems that climbed up the trellises. “And where is mine?” asked Miguel, nudging her like he did when they were younger and told each other everything. Esperanza smiled and pointed to the orange sunburst next to it.” They had a bit of a get-back-together moment. I think if that is how they’ll act in the next chapters, then they can be friends again. That is why I think that Miguel and Esperanza can be friends again.

  3. Miguel means that he means that he has differences and he has a different background than she does that separates them on different sides because he has a different job of being a servant and Esperanza has the privilege of being served by him and his family. “We stand on different sides of the river” means that they can see each other and talk to each other but they will always be different is some other way. Esperanza has more wealth than Miguel does and Miguel is just a servant that works for them family and is not as related as her and her Papa. When Esperanza learn of her fathers death she is devastated and burst into tears Miguel on the other hand is upset when he learns of Papa’s death. I think that they can be friends again because they have started to bond after the little talk in the garden. Also Esperanza is not that strong she might need help while working in the field and her mother might not be able to help so Miguel might be able to help her if they are friends.

    1. I didn't think of Miguel meaning that they have differences. But I totally agree. Great Job Sarah.

  4. I think that Miguel means that even though you're close doesn't mean that your on the same side as the other person. It doesn't mean they can hear you, it doesn't mean that they're listening, you are always on the other side of something.
Some of Miguels and Esperanzas differences are that Esperanza's mom is getting married to someone else and that is changing Esperanza's life, then Miguels a little servant living in a servant shack, while Esperanza is living in this big beautiful home with her mom and everything. Miguel is a servant huffing and puffing trying to earn money and they need it, and Esperanza is a child sleeping and breathing in a humble home.
I personally think that they can still be friends again because they already have such a relationship and even though they think that they are on different sides of the river, they can still build a bridge to cross back woth each other.
