Week 3 Discussion Question

As Esperanza and her mother begin the journey to California they realize that their life will never be the same. Esperanza has a hard time adjusting to this new way of life as a peasant, a commoner. "Esperanza had never been so close to so many peasants before." She even says, " We cannot travel in this car. It...it is not clean. And the people do not look trustworthy." When Esperanza doesn't share her doll with the girl in the car her mother is very embarrassed and disappointed, why? What do her actions on the journey show us about her character? Do you think Esperanza will learn to accept that they are no longer wealthy and change for the better? Why or why not?

  1. Esperanza’s mom is very shocked and disappointed when Esperanza doesn’t share her doll with the young girl because they are usually used to sharing and the book even says that Esperanza always liked sharing with the less fortunate and the poor.
The actions on her journey show us that she does not like to be back talked and she definitely doesn’t really like people who are going to talk bad about her father like Marta. She said, “Well my father died too, before he came to this country, he fought in the Mexican revolution against people like her father who owned all the land.” Esperanza didn’t like that. Esperanza also is a person that doesn’t deal well with change. She is scared about it and is very hyper about that, but Marta seems to take change well. She feels the right to talk badly about others who have the same problems as her.
I don’t think that Esperanza will learn to accept that they are no longer wealthy and change for the better. I think this because giving up the life that you’ve basically had forever, with the lights, the smell of good tasting food in the morning when you wake up, the clothes and accessories you have to dress in very morning is just washed away for this little town, where you work and live in shacks. That has to be hard for someone who is used to all the pampering. Given the life that Marta explained is way different then what Esperanza’s life used to be. So no I don’t think that she gonna except all those things.

    1. I didn't realize that she didn't like to be back talked. I am impressed that you thought so deep into the book on all parts.
      Great Job!

    2. I disagree with you. I don’t think that Esperanza will not accept that they are no longer wealthy and change for the better I think that she will learn to accept that life is changing but i think that this will take a long time for her to do. If she didn’t the book wouldn’t have a very good exciting ending is she didn’t learn to accept the changes in her life. But over all I think that you did a good job pulling evidence from the text.

  2. Her mother was embarrassed and disappointed because she believes that just because they came from wealth doesn’t mean that Esperanza shouldn’t share with the poor. This proves that Esperanza isn’t very giving. If she did share with the girl then she would have been giving. But since she didn’t she wouldn’t be placed under that category. I think it might take some time but eventually she will learn how to handle her new life. She will later learn that if she doesn’t she will lead a miserable life because she can’t accept it. If she does accept it then yes it would take some getting used to but she will adjust a lot quicker. But on the other hand she wouldn’t be able to do the jobs she is given and would be punished.

    1. Maddie I like how you thought of the consequences that Esperanza would face if she didn't get used to her new lifestyle. I really wouldn’t say that she was not giving, i think she was just a bit you know over protective because that doll was really special to her. But if she didn’t have a good reason for not letting the girl touch the doll then she would be not giving.

    2. Maddie I agree that just because they had wealth doesn’t mean that they can’t share with the poor. I also think that she doesn’t like to give and isn’t very giving, too. I think that it will take time for her to accept that her life is changing and that she can’t live her life the way she did before her fathers death.

    3. Maddie,
I like how you said "she wouldn’t be able to do the jobs she is given and would be punished." I really thought that you were really going deeper into the questions.
      Great Job

  3. Esperanza’s Mother was embarrassed and disappointed that Esperanza had not shared her doll with the girl because Esperanza’s mother knew that they were peasants just like the others in that train car and she thought that Esperanza knew that she was going to a very different life than she was used to be living. I think that the actions she had on the journey tell us that she doesn’t want to have a change to her lifestyle, that she doesn’t want to accept that she is a peasants now that her papa is gone. I think that Esperanza will learn to accept that they are no longer wealthy and the change is for the better but I think that it will take a long time for Esperanza to accept that her life has changed a lot.

    1. Sarah good thinking. You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. It’s like you get one book and you read the back and you look at the cover. You like that book because it’s clean and it has good pictures or illustrations, then you look at another copy of the SAME book and it’s torn and the illustrations are kinda off, and some of the pictures are missing. It’s still a good book. It’s the same with people.

    2. I definitely agree that her actions show us that she doesn't want to change her lifestyle. They way she acted with the girl just showed that about her. She really doesn't want to be like that girl. Do you think that she is going to be like that girl? I think so.
      Great Job.

  4. Esperanza’s mother is very disappointed in Esperanza because Esperanza was not really helping the poor little girl. The least Esperanza could do was let her touch her doll. Her mother should be mad at her because she made the girl cry. Something as simple as that is really what aggravated Ramona. Her actions on the journey show us lots about her character. They show us that she is a character who is changing into a new world and very disgusted at what she is about to face, being like that girl. It also shows a character trait of her, a more self centered person. I think maybe Esperanza will learn to accept that they are no longer wealthy and then change for the better around when she was at the farm for 2 weeks. I think that because she has to learn to accept herself and her surroundings. The story would not be so good if she didn’t. Everybody has to do that to become someone who enjoys their life.

    1. Jen I totally agree that Esperanza is a little self-centered. She doesn’t really think about other peoples problems, mostly hers. She always is like, “My life is so hard why do I have it hard and others have it easy?!” She sometimes can be self-centered. She still is a great person and all, but sometimes she just needs to think of others not just her.

Honestly your post made me think about it in a different way.
Although I disagree with the fact that Esperanza knew that they weren't going to be rich anymore and when she did find out she refused to give up her rich life.
