Week 4 Discussion Question

In Chapter 8 at the party, we learn about what Marta is encouraging people to do - STRIKE! She tells the people "they are small, meek animals. And that is how they treat us because we don't speak up." She tells the people they should fight for better homes and higher wages (aka more money). Many of the people though tell her that they just want to feed their families and that striking is a chance they cannot take because they could lose their jobs and homes. What does a strike mean in your own words? Do you think the people should listen to Marta and fight for a better life or should they not risk it and stay as they are now? Explain your thinking with examples from the book. What do you predict will happen?

Make sure to write in complete sentences and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. In my own words a strike is a mini revolution. People go against their leader and try to fight for what they want. I think listening to Marta depends. If they listen to Marta they could lose their jobs and instead of having their wages raised, they won’t get payed at all. If that happens then they would be sent back to where they came from. In the book it says that Marta started telling people why they should join her for a strike but no one was sure about joining her. I predict that the strike will happen and people will get hurt. People will also lose their jobs. I also think that someone that came with Esperanza will get hurt.

  2. Strike to me means that the people want to strike back in large groups to get what they want like what Marta and her rallies/people that want more money and better homes are doing. I think that they should not listen to Marta to fight for a better life because there are a lot of people and there is little money to go around so other do not get as much money. They people that get higher wages will lower and sometimes will get sent back to Mexico and Esperanza and her family can not afford to have that happen now. I predict that Esperanza will without Mama, Papa, and Abuelita will try to have more work to get more money, to bring Abuelita to Mama and I think that Esperanza is so desperate to find more work that she over does herself. I also predict that after this incident Esperanza will start to act more grown up and grow more mature.

    1. I sort of disagree about that there is little money to go around because the owners of the farm are receiving quite a bit of money from all the work that the Mexicans do.
      Great Job!

  3. A strike means in my own words that you strike people that are making you do something or has a better life then you and you want to make them pay for it so you basically strike and threaten them till they give you what you want.
I think people SHOULDN'T listen to Marta because if they’re feeling mad then take it out on a loaf of bread by beating it. Not risking to lose your own money paying job! Once again I recommend the loaf of bread. I’m saying this because a lot of people worked really hard to get these jobs and they really need it because they have families and they need to feed them and they need to work for the love of their family! They shouldn't strike. They already have a good life as it is.
I predict that people will still be mad and they will strike and the people who didn't strike will still lose their jobs because they didn't do anything to help stop the strike. I think that they will still lose their jobs because even if they didn't strike they just let it happen. So basically Marta is just putting all of them in danger.

    1. Great job adding a little bit of humor to your response by saying, "I think people SHOULDN'T listen to Marta because if they’re feeling mad then take it out on a loaf of bread by beating it." It brightens up your response just a little bit more since we are talking about something not so bright: striking.
      Great Job!

  4. Strike in my own words is when people stop working and demand for something they don’t have, like houses or more money. I think the people shouldn’t listen to Martha saying to strike for better homes and better money because they will just get fired and the owners of the farm will just hire new workers from states like Oklahoma. The text proves on pg 152 that they made the right decision. If Mama were out there, she would have caught her disease in a worse condition. The dust storm was right about at the time when they were about to strike. I predict that Martha is going to strike again and this time, Martha and her campaign will get fired, but the ones that didn’t strike will keep their jobs.
